Fixing Files That Open in the Wrong Program
If a file opens in the wrong program, or fails to open at all, the default application Windows uses for that file type is likely set incorrectly. Follow the steps below to correct this.
If a file opens in the wrong program, or fails to open at all, the default application Windows uses for that file type is likely set incorrectly. Follow the steps below to correct this.
Change the Default Program for a File Type
- Click the Windows Start button and type Default Apps.
- Select Default Apps from the system settings results, then scroll to the bottom of the list.
- Select Choose defaults by file type.
- Find the file extension you want to change (e.g.
.txt) by typing it into the Search box at the top, or scrolling through the list. - Click Choose a default (if no app is currently assigned), or click the app currently listed and select the correct program from the window that opens.
- Save your changes and reopen the file as needed.
The file type should now open correctly in the program you selected.
